STEM/STEAM Education

Just like Mathematics, Science has its own set of TEKS process standards by grade level. One way to address these Math and Science process standards is through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and the Engineering Design Process.

Jonas Greene, LISD Elementary Science Supervisor puts it this way:

"The focus for STAAR success should be around standards.  Science and Math are components of the STEM acronym.  Ensuring that STEM lessons focus on the essential Science and Math standards can improve STAAR success.  The STAAR assessment also incorporates process standards for both Math and Science.  Focusing on these process standards during STEM activities can help students not just learn science and math facts but become students that think, act, and communicate like scientists and mathematicians.  These are essential for STAAR success as the STAAR test is testing their communication (vocabulary) and critical thinking ability"

Further information on the need for STEM education can be found here. ISTE standards for Science education are here.

There is now a growing number of educators and others in the field that are beginning to use the STEAM acronym, adding Art to the mix. Makerspace education not only addresses STEM, but is a fantastic avenue for students to explore the arts as well.
